777rainbow Fossil fuel extraction in PH rises by 13.7% in 2023 – PSA

MANILA, Philippines — The amount of fossil fuels extracted in the country has increased by 13.7 percent777rainbow, according to the latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

In data shared on its website on Thursday, the PSA said a total of 21.72 million metric tons of fossil fuels were extracted in 2023, compared to 19.09 million metric tons in 2022.

Of the 21.72 million metric tons, coal had the largest share, amounting to 19.56 million metric tons, or 90.1 percent, while the remaining 9.9 percent came from crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids.

However, the country imported more than three times the total amount of extracted fossil fuels.

In 2023, the PSA said the total physical imports in the country amounted to 133.69 million metric tons, with fossil fuels making up the largest share at 48.2 percent, or about 64.43 million metric tons.

Fossil fuels refer to materials formed from biomass in the geological past and comprise solid, liquid, and gaseous materials, including coal and peat, crude oil and natural gas, oil shale, and tar sands.
